Producers Preview Cryptocurrency Movie ‘Crypto’

Producers Preview Cryptocurrency Movie ‘Crypto’

The producers of Crypto, Hollywood’s first big-budget cryptocurrency movie, recently gave a preview of the film that stars Kurt Russell.

One thing that Hollywood is known for is grabbing what is exciting and new and make some movies about it. This happened back in the 1960s with the space race, and the 1980s featured a ton of movies about breakdancing. Now it’s Bitcoin’s turn as a cryptocurrency movie is being made called Crypto, and its producers recently gave a small preview.

Cryptocurrency Goes Hollywood

Crypto is currently in post-production, and producers Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman talked to Inverse about the film. The movie is basically a cryptocurrency thriller that stars Kurt Russell, Alexis Bledel, Luke Hemsworth, and Beau Knapp.

The basic rundown of the movie is:

Dubbed a thriller in the vein of The Firm and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Crypto centers on a young anti-money laundering agent (Knapp) tasked with investigating a tangled web of corruption and fraud in his remote New York hometown, where his father (Russell) and brother (Hemsworth) are struggling to maintain their family farm in a changing economic landscape. The agent quickly finds himself enmeshed in a dangerous underworld populated by a mysterious art dealer (Bledel), a cryptocurrency enthusiast turned cybersleuth (Harris) and a corrupt accountant doing the bidding of ruthless clients (Kartheiser).

What is interesting is that no specific cryptocurrency is mentioned in Crypto. The producers say that the movie is “more broad” than just using Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The producers say that they are not experts on cryptocurrency. Levine notes:

Both of us have dabbled. I don’t know if either of us would consider ourselves expert. It was really our writers who fleshed out the topic and dove into the research. They were the ones who really became experts to make sure the film was authentic.

While the producers tout their writers, it’s likely that the movie will not be 100 percent accurate in its depiction of virtual currencies. It is interesting, though, that the producers are upbeat about cryptocurrency and “hope it lasts for a long time.”

More Than One Cryptocurrency Movie

Crypto is not the only cryptocurrency movie in the marketplace. It is the first big budget film from Tinseltown, but there are some other films that cryptocurrency enthusiasts can catch.

First up is Crypto the Movie, which is debuting on the Atomic Network January 9th, 2019. This movie is a “dramatic and thrilling story of the Cypherpunks and the movement to enhance our freedoms and privacy.”

The description for Crypto the Movie reads:

Our film follows the enigmatic Satoshi Nakamoto, as well as the legendary Cryptographer, Hal Finney, and his decades-long pursuit of the holy grail of Cryptocurrency. This shocking and surprisingly heartwarming drama will ultimately reveal Satoshi’s true identity.

One wonders who they’ll label as Satoshi Nakamoto. Their conclusion should drum up some strong opinions.

For action fans, there is Bitcoin Heist (found on Netflix). This movie features an Interpol special agent who goes rogue to catch a shadowy hacker. To catch the hacker, he assembles a team of thieves. While cryptocurrency usually doesn’t feature car chases and gunfights, the movies like to spice things up.

There are a number of documentaries on Bitcoin and other virtual currencies. Netflix has Banking on Bitcoin. There is also The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin, The Blockchain and Us, The Bitcoin Gospel, and The Bitcoin Phenomenon. There are plenty of others as well.
