It took a week for mall security to notice what had happened. Police Chief Jim Nelson says authorities then contacted Seattled-based Coinme, which operates the ATM, to make sure it was actually stolen and wasn’t taken in for maintenance.
Finnish news outlet Ilta Sanomat reports,
“How they removed the machine, how rapid it was without causing a disturbance or damage – they knew what they were doing.
They didn’t do anything to draw attention to themselves. Basically, they hid in plain sight.”
Coinme says it’s the first ATM theft in its five years in operation. The criminals will likely be unable to hack the machine to steal any virtual currency. They can, however, grab whatever cash is inside.
