ConsenSys Launches Sattelite to Track Space Debris Using Ethereum’s Blockchain

  • ConsenSys is launching a satellite tracking application using ethereum's blockchain.

Blockchain technology solutions company ConsenSys has announced the launch of a new satellite tracker based on Ethereum’s network. 

According to a tweet published on the company’s official account Oct. 22, the launch of the new application TruSat is an experiment in “democratizing” space endeavors,

The accompanying press release states that ConsenSys envisions a space program “in which any person can participate and contribute.” TruSat is being designed as an open-source, citizen-led “space sustainability system” which allow users to track satellites and orbital debris through the use of the Ethereum blockchain. 

According to ConsenSys, 

The number of satellites is increasing by 25x. Collisions threaten the technology we depend on every day and our spacefaring future. [...] TruSat is designed to be a citizen-powered system for creating a globally-trusted record of satellite orbits — a freely available resource that can be used to assess orbital operations in light of the space sustainability standards.

ConsenSys Space co-founder Chris Lewicki told GeekWire that building the project on ethereum’s network will give users “confidence” in the algorithms and the data generated with the program.
