Jack Dorsey’s Square, Inc. launches Square Crypto; on the hunt for crypto-engineers and designers

Square, Inc, the financial services company headed by Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, ventured into the cryptocurrency realm with the launch of Square Crypto. Dorsey also announced that the new crypto-project was on the lookout for crypto-engineers and designers. They’ll be paid in Bitcoin [BTC], he said.

Announcing it on Twitter, Dorsey also stated that the new hires would be working directly under the Twitter CEO, affirming his close association with the project.

The tweet stated,

“#BitcoinTwitter and #CryptoTwitter! Square is hiring 3-4 crypto engineers and 1 designer to work full-time on open source contributions to the bitcoin/crypto ecosystem. Work from anywhere, report directly to me, and we can even pay you in bitcoin! Introducing @SqCrypto. Why?”

The Twitter CEO, while recognizing Square Inc’s Mike Brock’s contribution to the project, agreed that the cryptocurrency ecosystem was in need of development, something Square Crypto will be working towards.

The Square Crypto project will not work directly for the financial services company, but will instead work for the cryptocurrency community as a whole. Since the project is “open source,” all the outputs of the work will be free for the public.

His tweet stated,

“This will be Square’s first open source initiative independent of our business objectives. These folks will focus entirely on what’s best for the crypto community and individual economic empowerment, not on Square’s commercial interests. All resulting work will be open and free.”

Dorsey claimed that the initiative was an attempt at giving back to the “open source community,” and the Square Crypto project was in line with Square Inc’s broader goal to build a “more accessible global financial system for the internet.”

Comparing the cryptocurrency “technology” to the “early internet,” Dorsey lauded the technology as “deeply principled, purpose-driven, edgy and…really weird.” This was in line with his previous statements, including one where he suggested Bitcoin could be the Internet’s first native currency.

“The internet deserves a native currency; it will have a native currency. I hope it will be Bitcoin.”

Finally, Dorsey also opened up Square Crypto’s Direct Messages [DMs] to prospective applicants who are Bitcoin core developers, or developers of other cryptocurrency projects, inviting them to work full-time for the company.
