McAfee Joins Weibo to Reach Out to Chinese Crypto Investors
Self-proclaimed ‘cryptocurrency king’ John McAfee announced he would join Chinese cryptocurrency social media platform Weibo with the aim of "softening his landing" to reach out to digital currency investors in the region.
McAfee made the announcement via a Tweet. However, he also pointed out that he’ll be moving to Weibo, which has over 400 million active users on a monthly basis, is believed to be the Chinese counterpart of Twitter and is the most popular as well as the leading social platform in China.
“I am joining China’s version of Twitter @SinaWeiboI and look forward to making Chinese friends. This would not be possible without @_blockandchain_ and colleagues. Thank you, Mia!" McAfee said in his Tweet.
Industry insiders say the step to reach out to virtual currency investors in China is just based on speculations, for now, they believe in certainty McAfee will gain the attention that always follows him using other platforms, like Twitter. Weibo would benefit from the same attention, they said, but they could include both friends and enemies.
A lot has been going on for McAfee the past couple of months.
In July, he offered $100,000 for anyone who can hack his hardware wallet after joining the BitFi team. Bitfi quickly clarified the bounty is proposed to resolve any concerns about the security of their wallet and not intended to help the company Bitfi identify security vulnerabilities “since we already claim that our security is absolute and that the wallet cannot be hacked or penetrated by outside attacks.”
Early this month, McAfee debated with the CEOs of TokenPay, ModernChain, and Omnitude to discuss the contentious topic of cryptocurrency mainstream adoption with fellow blockchain enthusiasts live on Keith Wareing’s youtube channel.
