Freelancers & the Blockchain: Reasons Why Decentralization of Payments is Long OverdueThe problem
A study shows that nearly 6 out of 10 freelancers have had an experience with runaway clients that don’t pay for their work. And those clients that do pay end up delaying the payment for long such that by the time the freelancer receives the money, the value is less than what it was when the freelancer submitted the task. Another issue are unauthorized payments, so-called fraudulent chargebacks, resulting in the freelancer completing the job without getting paid at all. Then there's Paypal, not only charging a heavy fee of 5.5% but also the possibility for clients to dispute the payment, and as you may know, Paypal often decides in favor of the buyer. These are serious issues that each freelancer deals with on a regular base, and in each case its always the freelancer that gets screwed, to put it blunt.
The solution
Utilizing the blockchain for permanent payments. Clients still have the option to review the work the freelancer submits, and its in their right to approve or reject it as always, but once the work has been approved the payment gets released from our internal escrow system and the freelancer has nothing to worry about anymore. In case a client has other things on his/her mind the system sends a reminder email, if the client still takes no action a smart contract will release the payment x days after the freelancer has submitted the completed work. Our aim is to set up a freelance platform where the community runs it, and deals with any internal disputes, those volunteers will be rewarded with CHW tokens. This way the quality of the work by freelancers will be kept in check. The token also serves to reward freelancers, for example there will be weekly leaderboards, and clients will get rewarded if he/she rates the work the freelancer provided. This is why we've launched our own token, as an incentive for clients, freelancers, and volunteers to engage with our platform. By doing it this way we can cut commission fees like our competitors charge, Think of Upwork and Freelancer.com that both charge up ot 20% commission on each job. We can reduce this to an absolute minimum so that only the transaction fees at the Ethereum network are covered.
