Ethereum Q&A: Smart contracts and law ambiguity

Why is "smart contract" a confusing term? Are smart contracts legally enforceable if people don't understand how they are executed? Could we make human-readable smart contracts, reconciling the ambiguity of real-world law vs. code law?
