Wien Energie, Austria’s Largest Energy Provider Launches Blockchain Driven Refrigerator
The newly developed blockchain driven fridge was revealed at a crypto conference which took place in Vienna on April 3.In the official release statement, it was noted that this is the first time DLT will be used in the construction of a refrigerator.
The release also made it known that the main agenda of the project is to increase consumer interest in the sustainable consumption of energy.The use of DLT in the product, allows a user to select the source of the energy. So whether one wants to make use of solar panel or a wind power plant. Blockchain makes it possible to trace the source of the energy to its origin.
Also, the blockchain fridge can be fully operated using a smartphone. Using a smartphone, users are able to control the temperature of the fridge and freezer, check whether the door is properly closed, and trace the energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Although the blockchain fridge is currently not on sale, there is already a working plan to have the product tested.The release stated that the fridge will be tested using three pilot customers in the coming months.
According to Wien Energie CEO Peter Gönitzer, blockchain is a great opportunity to reduce the unnecessary waste of energy. He also stated that the decentralized ecosystem could contribute to creating a transparent and user-friendly energy market.
Furthermore, Wien Energie has made it known that it has extensive plans to trial blockchain implementation in the energy sector on a larger scale. In efforts to ensure this, the Austria company has partnered with blockchain interface company Riddle & Code to help with the deployment of decentralized infrastructure in a yet to be named urban development area.
