Bitmain Launches 50MW Crypto Mining Facility in Texas amid Drive for Expansion

Bitmain has announced the launch of a crypto mining facility in Texas, with hopes that it could later become the largest in the world.

Bitmain, the Chinese manufacturer of computing chips and cryptocurrency mining equipment, has just launched a 50MW facility for crypto mining in Texas’ Rockdale city. The facility was erected in conjunction with DMG Blockchain Solutions, a Canadian firm, as well as the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD).

According to an official Bitmain publication, construction of the facility began last year, after the company announced that it would erect the biggest cryptocurrency mining farm in the world. Bitmain then began building the mining farm with an initial goal of 25MW on a large 33,000-acre space from the Aluminum Company of America, Alcoa. Bitmain has announced that it will still go on with construction and continue building this facility which is expandable to 300MW. This will keep with its promise of building the largest mining farm in the world, as no other has a larger capacity than 300MW.

According to Rockdale Lead Project Manager for Bitmain Clinton Brown, the facility is in line with Bitmain’s continuous plans to spread its reach. Furthermore, Brown mentioned that the choice of Texas is because the state’s resources aren’t only relevant to Bitmain, but also to the entire crypto industry.

“We are excited to launch this facility, which is significant to Bitmain’s global expansion plans. The stable and efficient energy resources in Texas are fundamental to the inevitable scale of growth for the cryptocurrency mining industry,” says the company.

Last year, Bitmain announced that it had chosen Rockdale, Texas, for its new facility erection and would be pumping a total of $500 million into the endeavor, over a seven-year time frame. At the time, Bitmain said operations would begin this year and would be fully operational within 2 years of the announcement. Bitmain also planned that the new facility would create about 400 in the same period.

The Texas facility is now the third crypto-related project that the company has invested heavily into, outside its home country of China. Collaboration between Bitmain, DMG and the Rockdale MDD will continue as DMG will be responsible for the management and operation of the facility, ensuring optimum efficiency at all times. DMG’s COO, Sheldon Bennett has already expressed some excitement about the partnership and the achievement for crypto mining:

“This mining facility marks a major milestone in the development of the mining farm industry. We are proud to partner with Bitmain, the leading innovator in this sector.”

Already, Bitmain has concluded plans to obtain the energy it needs to power the facility, straight from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the body in charge of Rockdale’s power grid.

The announcement of Bitmain’s mining facility also goes a bit further than just setting a record as the world’s first 300MW mining facility. The company also hopes to add its quota to the future of the industry by partnering with schools in Rockdale to teach students about mining and blockchain technology.
