Apple Announced CryptoKit for iOS 13, Crypto Wallets Coming to New iPhones?

Apple has recently announced CryptoKit, a fast and secure Swift API to perform cryptographic operations. The news comes from Apple’s official website in the form of brief introduction. More information and details are to be revealed today at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The WWDC event will be majorly focused on the release of Apple’s latest version of operating system – iOS13, and will cover the latest upgrade for developers and the company’s future plans.

CryptoKit will provide developers with a new framework for cryptographic functionality. This will open a new opportunity for app developers to integrate such features as hashing, key generation, and encryption. The new Swift API will allow using public-key cryptography as well as private keys stored in and managed by Apple’s Secure Enclave, the part of A7 and newer chips used in iPhones. According to the official overview:

“Use public-key cryptography to create and evaluate digital signatures, and to perform key exchange. In addition to working with keys stored in memory, you can also use private keys stored in and managed by the Secure Enclave.”

Although the company’s future plans related to cryptocurrency integration are yet to be revealed, some rumors continue to appear. Mostly, they are about Apple’s probable intention to follow the recent Samsung’s initiative with cryptocurrency integration.

After the launch of Samsung Galaxy S10 with an integrated hardware wallet designed to store private keys earlier this year, crypto asset integration into Samsung Pay is reportedly on its way. However, Apple prefers to leave all this without any comments for now.

Apple has already released the new icon set designed for iOS13, which is compatible with the company’s San Francisco font. Surprisingly, four Bitcoin logos – two circular BTC logos and two square – have been found among the list of 1,000 newly released icons. No other logos or cryptocurrencies are among the list.
