Canadian town partners with Coinberry to provide residents the option of paying municipal taxes in Bitcoin

Canadian digital currency platform, Coinberry, has partnered with the city of Richmond Hill to provide residents a choice of paying their municipal taxes in Bitcoin.

On July 10, Richmond Hill’s City Council had voted in favor of the agreement, citing the provision of an option for property tax payment in Bitcoin for businesses and residents of the region. This partnership makes Richmond Hill the first city and second Canadian municipality to provide residents with such an option.

Richmond Hill’s Deputy Mayor, Joe Di Paola, had moved the motion before the City Council and commented that cryptocurrencies will get more popular with time, specifically with millennials. He said,

“Our Council was aware of Coinberry’s successful implementation of a digital currency payment service with the Town of Innisfil, and since there was no cost and no risk to the City of Richmond Hill to do the same, it made the decision that much easier for us.”

The latest partnership commemorates Coinberry’s second municipal partnership in less than six months. Previously, Innisfil, a town outside Toronto, became the first Canadian town to accept Bitcoin for tax payments.

However, development is still in process and the municipal staff will be required to report back on the workability of the execution of Coinberry’s technology for other payment methods in the city, by 30 September 2019.
